SOLUTION
Protecting Aurora's margins in volatile electricity markets
The problem for Tasmanian Government-owned Aurora Energy was how to protect their margins in energy markets that are more complex and volatile than ever before. Prices in the current spot market can range from the Market Price Cap of $16,600/MWh to the Market Floor Price of -1,000/MWh. That’s some seesaw. As the State’s largest electricity retailer, Aurora Energy had a lot on the line.
As a registered market participant in the Australian National Electricity Market, we leveraged our industry insight and trading expertise to develop and execute a diversified risk management strategy to help Aurora manage their wholesale power purchasing, financial hedging contracts, and exposure to market price volatility.
In constantly shifting markets, decades of dealing with different scenarios means we’re sure-footed when it comes to transfer pricing, bidding, contracting, valuation, and settlements. We keep our finger on the live market pulse. Our options, swaps, caps and load flex hedge and credit products are backed by and Australian Financial Services Licence and tailored to meet your pricing needs, volumes and market bias and risk appetite while achieving the best possible cost outcomes.
For Aurora Energy, we’re providing certainty of cash flow and building their bottom line. For us, it’s another case of energy solved.
Delivering an Australian Energy Market success story
In 2007, Arcadia Energy, a renowned global oil trading entity, entrusted JPA Energy with the mission of establishing a pioneering energy trading enterprise in Australia. JPA leveraged it’s extensive experience to secure a strong foothold in the market. Over the course of the past 17 years, JPA Energy has been at the helm of Arcadia Energy Australia, steering it towards financial success, which has been achieved through the development and implementation of innovative solutions across a diverse range of sectors, including Electricity, Renewables, Diesel Fuels, Logistics, NEM intermediary services, and Specialised Advisory.
Throughout this time, JPA Energy has remained dedicated to delivering excellence in service. This journey from mission inception to current success underscores JPA Energy's commitment and strategic prowess in navigating the complexities of the local energy market.
For Arcadia, we're breaking through the barriers . For us, it's another case of energy solved.
Helping Vena Energy to de-risk their renewable energy projects
The problem for Vena Energy was how to reduce the risk exposure of its proposed $200 million solar power plant at Tailem Bend, South Australia. Any issues with registration, settlement and capability services could translate to costly delays and seven figure losses. As Asia’s largest renewable energy independent power producer, Vena needed a solution that ensured the sun didn’t set on its 127MW project.
With more than 20 years’ electricity market experience, JPA Energy leveraged its capability to provide multifunctional Agency Services to Vena Energy.
We are geared to support energy projects throughout their entire life cycle. Our kitbag is not only chockers with expertise but an Austraclear account, Australian Financial Services Licence, AFMA Membership and a REC Registry Account as well. We have the ability to stand principal to electricity derivatives, both vanilla and complex structures and also Renewable Product contracts.
We provide the know-how that renewable energy developers need to navigate complex regulatory environments, submit permit applications, and obtain approvals. We have supported over 2,500 megawatts of clean power across wind, solar, hydro, and biomass projects.
For Vena, we’re smoothing the path to project success. For us, it’s another case of energy solved.
Fuelling Hydro Tas’ vehicle fleet at Gordon Power Station Tasmania
The problem for Hydro Tas was refuelling their vehicle fleet at Gordon Power Station near Tullah, 190km southwest of Launceston. The Station’s workforce travelled long distances over icy, wet roads just to fill up. It was inconvenient not to mention unsafe. As Australia’s largest clean energy generator, Hydro Tas needed a fuel solution that held water. JPA Energy had the answer.
We installed an in-situ servo, taking care of all site work, regulatory compliance, and freight logistics. Two relocatable fuel container tanks are now on site and equipped with pump dispensers and usage meters which provide top up alerts to ensure Hydro Tas is never in neutral. The tanks are safe, heavy duty, and fully compliant for the harshest conditions and can accommodate multiple fuel grades (E10, PULP98, PULP 95, Diesel).
For Hydro Tas, we’re powering greater performance and safety. For us, it’s another case of energy solved.
James Gillard
Director
James co-founded JPA Energy in 2007 following a 20-year career in the energy industry which spanned roles with international oil major BP and Queensland government-owned electricity generator and retailer Ergon Energy. His role at BP included senior commercial appointments in London and New York where his remit covered the full spectrum of the global oil business including operations, logistics, refining and trading. When Ergon was formed in 1999, James was recruited to establish the company’s electricity trading business. As General Manager Trading, he was responsible for the risk management of a 20 TWh per annum retail electricity book and was a senior member of the commercial team that managed the $1.2 billion sale of the business to AGL in 2007.
At JPA, James applies his wealth of petroleum markets experience to answer fuel storage and supply challenges for clients throughout Australia and the wider Pacific region, particularly those in remote locations. In between establishing JPA Energy’s fuel supply arm, James traded the first Certified Emissions Reduction unit deal for AGL’s Loy Yang Power Station in 2009.
Additionally, James and Anthony manage JPA Energy’s electricity risk management business delivering products specifically designed to assist retailers, large energy users, and new entrant generators in Australia’s National Electricity Market. These products include:
- Hedging “vanilla” and half hourly exposures to the electricity spot price
- Managing customer load flex
- Cash flow sensitive hedging strategies
- Transfer pricing methodologies and linkage to the wholesale market
- Managing AEMO prudential obligations
- Measuring, managing, and reporting risk positions in electricity
James is an Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA) Accredited Dealer for Foreign Exchange and holds AFMA Diploma of Financial Services for Foreign Exchange and Electricity Specialist.
Anthony Rohan
Director
Anthony started his career in the agricultural commodities sector before transferring his risk management knowledge to the Australian electricity market when it first deregulated in 1998. As Manager of Contestable Business Trading at Ergon Energy, he managed the largest contestable electricity portfolio in the National Electricity Market for close to a decade. The close working relationships he developed with customers helped him to develop new financial and risk products which are still widely used today.
At JPA Energy, which he co-founded in 2007, Anthony has again drawn on his deep and wide understanding of commodity markets to develop products and services for clients participating in emerging markets in Australia as well as the wider Asia Pacific region. He has supported over 2,500 megawatts of proposed power for solar, wind, hydro and biomass projects. His ability to solve challenges, navigate complex regulatory environments, reduce financial risk, minimise delays, save money and to simply get the job done has helped him to become a trusted business partner for numerous electricity retailers, generators, and large market end-users.
As the renewable energy transition has built momentum, Anthony has led JPA’s renewable energy business finding solutions to the challenges faced by participants including:
- Assisting with the management of renewable generation’s firm/non-firm risk
- Providing opinion and education on the Australian wholesale energy market
- Providing opportunities and pathways to monetise renewable generation via the wholesale marketplace; and
- Providing reporting structures in both front and middle office that ensures market risk is reduced and reported consistently.
Anthony is an Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA) Accredited Dealer for Foreign Exchange and holds AFMA Diploma of Financial Services for Foreign Exchange and Electricity Specialist.
